What is Semantic Markup?
Semantic markup is a web development approach prioritizing meaning and structure over visual presentation of HTML content. It uses HTML elements and structured data to accurately convey content purpose and context to search engines and assistive technologies (like screen readers).
Traditionally, content was wrapped in simple <div> tags, but semantic markup uses meaningful tags like <article>, <nav>, <header>, <aside> to tell machines “this is navigation” or “this is article text.”

JSON-LD is the structured data format. JavaScript Object Notation structured data embeds in script tags, adding meaning information without complicating HTML.
This resembles library classification. Books’ titles alone don’t clearly indicate “fiction” vs. “reference” vs. “magazine,” but Dewey Decimal classification labeling “fiction” enables librarians and users to find books accurately. Similarly, semantic markup “classifies” content so search engines and assistive technology function properly.
