What is State / Context Memory?

State / Context Memory is the mechanism that allows AI chatbots and agents to retain conversation progress, user preferences, and past interactions, then recall and use them across sessions. This enables the bot to “remember” the user, creating a human-like dialogue experience.

In a nutshell: Like a human counselor who remembers your concerns from your first visit and addresses follow-ups at your next appointment. The AI can say, “Regarding the issue you mentioned last week, here’s a solution.”

How It Works

State / Context Memory uses a two-layer structure: temporary memory (retained only during conversation) and persistent memory (retained after session ends). During conversation, recent interactions are held in memory within the context window (the amount of text an LLM processes at once), maintaining dialogue consistency. Important user attributes and progress are saved to a database for retrieval in future sessions.

For example, a customer support bot keeps today’s conversation history in temporary memory (faster responses) and saves purchase history and known issues to a database (persistent storage) for use in tomorrow’s session.
