How SIP Trunking Works
The SIP trunking process begins when a user initiates a call from their IP phone or softphone application connected to the organization’s PBX system. The PBX receives the call request and determines whether the destination is internal or external to the organization’s network.
For external calls, the PBX forwards the call request to the Session Border Controller (SBC), which performs security checks, protocol validation, and applies any necessary call routing policies before passing the request to the SIP trunk provider.
The SIP trunk provider receives the call invitation and performs authentication to verify that the calling organization is authorized to use the service. The provider then analyzes the destination number to determine the appropriate routing path through the PSTN or other networks.
Once the routing path is established, the SIP trunk provider sends the call invitation to the destination network, which could be another SIP-enabled system, a traditional telephone network, or a mobile carrier, depending on the called party’s phone system.
When the called party answers, a bidirectional media path is established using RTP for the actual voice or video transmission, while SIP continues to manage the session state and any mid-call changes such as hold, transfer, or conference operations.
Throughout the call duration, the SBC monitors the media quality, applies security policies, and manages bandwidth allocation to ensure optimal communication performance and protect against potential security threats.
When either party terminates the call, SIP signaling messages are exchanged to properly close the session, release network resources, and generate appropriate call detail records for billing and reporting purposes.
Example Workflow: A sales representative in New York calls a client in London. The IP phone sends a SIP INVITE to the PBX, which routes it through the SBC to the SIP trunk provider. The provider routes the call through international gateways to the London PSTN, establishes the connection, and maintains the RTP media stream until the call ends with a SIP BYE message.
