What is a VoIP (Voice over IP)?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a revolutionary communication technology that enables voice conversations to be transmitted over Internet Protocol (IP) networks rather than traditional circuit-switched telephone networks. This technology converts analog voice signals into digital data packets that can be transmitted over the internet or any IP-based network infrastructure. How VoIP (Voice over IP) Works

The VoIP communication process begins when a user initiates a call by dialing a number or selecting a contact through their VoIP application or device. The system first performs user authentication and authorization to ensure the caller has permission to make the requested call.

The calling device sends a SIP INVITE message to the VoIP server or directly to the destination endpoint, containing session information and codec preferences. This signaling process establishes the communication parameters and negotiates the optimal settings for the call.

Upon receiving the INVITE message, the destination device or server responds with provisional responses (such as “100 Trying” and “180 Ringing”) to indicate call progress. The receiving party’s device begins ringing or displaying an incoming call notification.

When the called party answers, a “200 OK” response is sent back to the originating device, confirming call acceptance. The calling device acknowledges this response with an ACK message, completing the three-way SIP handshake and establishing the voice session.

Both endpoints begin capturing audio through their respective microphones, converting analog voice signals to digital format using Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs). The digital audio data is then processed through the selected voice codec for compression and optimization.

The compressed voice data is packetized using RTP protocol, with each packet containing sequence numbers, timestamps, and payload information. These packets are transmitted across the IP network through routers and switches to reach the destination endpoint.

At the receiving end, RTP packets are collected, reordered if necessary, and processed through the corresponding codec for decompression. The digital audio data is converted back to analog format using Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) and played through speakers or headphones.

Throughout the conversation, RTCP packets are exchanged between endpoints to monitor call quality, report transmission statistics, and enable adaptive adjustments to optimize performance. When either party ends the call, a SIP BYE message is sent to terminate the session and release network resources.

Example Workflow: A sales representative using a softphone application calls a client’s VoIP number. The softphone sends a SIP INVITE to the company’s VoIP server, which routes the call to the client’s IP phone. After the client answers, RTP packets carry the conversation while RTCP monitors quality, and the call concludes with a SIP BYE message when either party hangs up.
