What is a Single Sign-On (SSO)?

Single Sign-On (SSO) is an authentication mechanism that enables users to access multiple applications, systems, or services with a single set of login credentials. Rather than requiring users to maintain separate usernames and passwords for each application they need to access, SSO creates a centralized authentication system that validates user identity once and then grants access to all authorized resources within the organization’s ecosystem. This approach fundamentally transforms how users interact with digital resources by eliminating the need for multiple authentication events during a single session.

The core principle behind SSO lies in the establishment of a trusted relationship between an identity provider (IdP) and multiple service providers (SPs). When a user successfully authenticates with the identity provider, the system generates a secure token or assertion that serves as proof of the user’s verified identity. This token can then be presented to any connected service provider to gain access without requiring additional authentication steps. JSON Web Tokens (JWT) are compact, URL-safe tokens that represent claims between parties. JWTs are frequently used in modern SSO implementations to securely transmit user identity and authorization information between services.

How Single Sign-On (SSO) Works

The SSO authentication process begins when a user attempts to access a protected application or service. The system first checks whether the user has an active authentication session with the identity provider. If no valid session exists, the user is redirected to the centralized authentication portal where they must provide their credentials.

Upon successful credential verification, the identity provider creates a secure authentication token or assertion that contains the user’s identity information and authorization details. This token is digitally signed to prevent tampering and may be encrypted to protect sensitive information during transmission between systems.

The identity provider then redirects the user back to the originally requested application, along with the authentication token. The service provider receives this token and validates its authenticity by checking the digital signature against the identity provider’s public key or certificate.

Once the token is validated, the service provider extracts the user’s identity and authorization information to determine what level of access should be granted. The user is then allowed to access the requested application without needing to provide additional credentials.

For subsequent applications accessed during the same session, the process is streamlined. The identity provider recognizes the existing authentication session and immediately issues new tokens for additional service providers without requiring the user to re-enter credentials.

The SSO session continues until it expires based on predetermined timeout settings, the user explicitly logs out, or security policies trigger session termination. When the session ends, the user must re-authenticate to access any protected resources.

Example Workflow: A marketing manager logs into the corporate portal at 9:00 AM using their username and password. They then access the CRM system, email platform, project management tool, and analytics dashboard throughout the day without entering additional credentials. At 6:00 PM, the session expires, requiring re-authentication for any further access attempts.
