To fix that, we investigated the AI billing structures of five major tools—Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, and LiveAgent—then decomposed them and organized estimates by usage pattern. By the end, you should have numbers you can actually put into a budget.

Two types of “helpdesk AI” and three billing models

The first thing to clarify is that “AI” in helpdesk tools often refers to two different capabilities.

Autonomous resolution (AI Agent) — AI answers customer inquiries directly and resolves them without human intervention. This includes chatbots and automated email responses.

The invisible cost structure — list price is only “Layer 1”

Layer 2: AI feature billing

This is where complexity begins.

Resolution-based variable costs: With Zendesk ($1.50/resolution) and Intercom ($0.99/resolution), costs scale with ticket volume. For example, at 2,000 tickets/month and a 40% AI resolution rate:
